  1. STANDARDS OF CONDUCT
  2.  
  3. These standards provide specific statements of behavior.
  4. They are not objectives to be strived for, they are rules that
  5. no true Sysop will violate.  It is first of all expected that an
  6. information processing professional (Sysop) will abide by the appropriate
  7. laws of their country and community.  The following standards
  8. address tenets that apply to the profession (Sysop).
  9.  
  10. IN RECOGNITION OF MY OBLIGATION TO THE NET I SHALL:
  11.  
  12. Keep my personal knowledge up-to-date and insure that
  13. proper expertise is available when needed.
  14.  
  15. Share my knowledge with others and present factual and
  16. objective information to the Net to the best of my ability.
  17.  
  18. Not misuse the authority entrusted to me.
  19.  
  20. Not misrepresent or withhold information concerning the
  21. capabilities of equipment, software, or systems.
  22.  
  23. Not take advantage of the lack of knowledge or inexperience
  24. on the part of others.
  25.  
  26. IN RECOGNITION OF MY OBLIGATION TO MY FELLOW
  27. MEMBERS AND THE PROFESSION I SHALL:
  28.  
  29. Be honest in all my professional relationships.
  30.  
  31. Take appropriate action in regard to any illegal or unethical
  32. practices that come to my attention.  However, I will bring
  33. charges against any person only when I have reasonable
  34. basis for believing in the truth of the allegations and without
  35. regard to personal interest.
  36.  
  37. Endeavor to share my special knowledge.
  38.  
  39. Cooperate with others in achieving understanding and in
  40. identifying problems.
  41.  
  42. Not use or take credit for the work of others without specific
  43. acknowledgement and authorization.
  44.  
  45. Not take advantage of the lack of knowledge or inexperience
  46. on the part of others for personal gain.
  47.  
  48. IN RECOGNITION OF MY OBLIGATION TO SOCIETY I SHALL:

  50. Protect the privacy and confidentiality of all information
  51. entrusted to me.
  52.  
  53. Use my skill and knowledge to inform the public in all areas of
  54. my expertise.
  55.  
  56. To the best of my ability, insure that the products of my work
  57. are used in a socially responsible way.
  58.  
  59. Support, respect and abide by the appropriate local, state,
  60. provincial and federal laws.
  61.  
  62. Never misrepresent or withhold information that is germane
  63. to a problem or situation of public concern nor will I allow any
  64. such known information to remain unchallenged.
  65.  
  66. Not use knowledge of a confidential or personal nature in any
  67. unauthorized manner or to achieve personal gain.
  68.  
  69. Make every effort to ensure that I have the most current
  70. knowledge and that the proper expertise is available when needed.
  71.  
  72. Present a fair, honest, and objective viewpoint.
  73.  
  74. Protect the privacy and confidentiality of all information
  75. entrusted to me.
  76.  
  77. Not misrepresent or withhold information that is germane to
  78. the situation.
  79.  
  80. This last one is really optional:
  81.  
  82. Not attempt to use the resources of the Net for personal
  83. gain or for any purpose without proper approval.
